Volte Alte
The cortile at Volte Alte lit up at night, with small tables and candles on the lawn

“This refuge from cares”

So reads the Latin inscription that Sigismondo Chigi had carved on the façade in 1505. Today the villa, in the hills around Siena, is open for your events for the first time.

The villa

A villa by Baldassarre Peruzzi, built around its cortile

The two wings of the horseshoe plan enclose a cortile with arcades on two storeys, a layout that anticipates the Farnesina in Rome. Beneath the loggiato is the stone bench, and on the first floor the rooms open off a gallery with ochre vaults and a terracotta floor; some of them still have their ceilings frescoed with grotesques in the early sixteenth century. In front of the façade lie the gravel terrace, under the branches of the cedar, and the lawn that slopes down to the boundary wall.

We are at the villa from setting up until closing, and together with you we choose the spaces for the arrival of your guests, the aperitivo, dinner and the dancing.

Where we are

Where Siena ends and the countryside begins

The villa stands on a hill west of Costalpino, on the border between Siena and Sovicille. The entrance is on the Strada delle Volte Alte, with the gate at the end of a cypress-lined drive.

All around the villa there are fields, which is why in the evening you can hear the silence. Your guests will find parking beyond the gate.

The return

Built for the Chigi in 1505, open again since the spring of 2025

  1. 1505

Sigismondo Chigi completes the villa to a design by Baldassarre Peruzzi, who is not yet twenty-five.

  2. 1510

Pope Julius II comes to visit, and around the same time the vaults are frescoed with grotesques, stuccoes and medallions inspired by the Domus Aurea, recently rediscovered in Rome.

  3. 1603

Agostino Chigi buys the villa and restores it: he has the façades plastered and enriches the library and the garden.

  4. Twentieth century

The villa passes to the State, which for a time grants it in usufruct to the University of Siena, and it then stays closed for many years.

  5. Spring 2025

After the restoration the villa reopens, and from the autumn it hosts its first events. In June 2026 the four sculptures by Alberto Inglesi arrive in the park.
